Curators Thembinkosi Goniwe and Melissa Mboweni engaged in a dialogue with artists, writers and curators around several issues currently preoccupying cultural interactions and interventions on the continent of Africa, resulting in the curatorial concept of – Space: Currencies in Contemporary African Art.

Space embodies two notions, space and pace, which signify sites/contexts and tempos/energies that are part of societal make up. Space is wherein ideas are negotiated and meaning produced through various human activities and social practices, while pace refers to speed, the rate at which change or advancement of such activities and practices takes place in society.

Currencies refer not only to movement fluidity or rhythm but also to currency of an economic nature. Artists have been invited to engage with various aspects of the curatorial concept with a view to reflecting personal yet shared interpretations of Africa and the Diaspora that are neither prescriptive nor restrictive.

The Catalogue:
Respected writers have been invited to put forward essays, poems and articles dealing with issues pertaining to the Continent of Africa and the curatorial concept.
These will be included in a rich, informative and interesting catalogue.

by William Kentridge.

Closes 1 August 2010.

A comic and visually dazzling video installation by artist William Kentridge, in “I Am Not Me, the Horse is Not Mine,” who gives an unusual presentation related to his current opera-in-progress: a work inspired by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s satirical opera “The Nose,” based on the Nikolai Gogol short story of the same name.

The work stems from Kentridge’s ongoing interest in the roots and trajectory of modernism: a mixture of the absurd, the self-reflective (and the ‘self-divided’) and the forms of fragmentation that one associates with modernism, its crushing in Russia in the 1930s and the long-term trajectory of the terrors of hierarchy.

In partnership with In Context – a series of exhibitions and interventions in the city of Johannesburg featuring local and international artists.

Johannesburg Art Gallery
King George Street, between Wolmarans and Noord Streets, Joubert Park.

UITPAK, ESTRELLA DE MAR and AMERICA MADE IN CHINA at JAG

Opening: Sunday 18 April 2010
Hannelie Coetzee’s Uitpak: 4pm
Nuria Mora’s Estrella de Mar : 5pm
Roelien Brink’s America made in China: 6pm

Once again there are three exciting exhibition openings at the Johannesburg Art Gallery to make your Sunday afternoon all the more enjoyable. Three women artists with three different angles on art and life:

Hannelie Coetzee’s exhibition Uitpak consists of 324 pieces of sandstone that had been engraved for installation at Freedom Park. These were subsequently rejected and discarded -condemned to wastage as landfill. The artist has salvaged the slabs, creating a memorial artwork outside JAG, which finds new life to speak of a community’s past and their particular, long-ago struggle.

Taking as her example the starfish that re-grows any limb that is severed, Nuria Mora´s Estrella de Mar project creates a multitude of works all stemming from the same nuclei. Starting with a simple cube in the gallery space, this is added to and then dismantled piece by piece. New street works, originating from the removable parts of the first work are then created within the city. http://albertodepedro.ekosystem.org/category/nuria-mora/

In an exhibition titled America made in China, the artist William Kentridge, formerly known as Roelien Brink, considers aesthetics ideals from within a consumerist and media saturated culture. She looks at how media confers value on mere symbols, such as artworks, through its idealization of youth and beauty. The exhibition challenges our value system, which the artist considers groundless.
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=108137925873401

All of these exhibitions are short interventions but, in the case of Hannelie Coetzee and Nuria Mora, the product will remain behind – Hannelie in the form of her installation outside the JAG and Nuria in the form of murals around the city.

Exhibition enquiries: Ricky Burnett 0760379403

Venue: Johannesburg Art Gallery, King George Street, between Wolmarans and Noord Streets, Joubert Park, Johannesburg
Secure parking is available
Open Tuesday to Sunday – 10am to 5pm.
Closed Mondays, Good Friday & Christmas Day

INVITATION
Auke de Vries (sculptor NL,1937)
‘A Gentle Invasion: Sculptures for South Africa’
NIROX SCULPTURE PARK, CRADLE OF HUMANKIND

Please join us in the NIROX SCULPTURE PARK
on sunday 28 February from 10 AM for the opening
of an exhibition of sculptures, entitled ‘A Gentle Invasion’,
by the dutch artist, Auke de Vries.

Tea will be served in the garden and Auke will walk guests through the show at 11 AM providing his unique insights into the spatial and other issues that drive the creation of his remarkable work.

NIROX is a private foundation set in 15 hectares of an extensive nature reserve in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. The complex lies 45 minutes outside Johannesburg.

NOTES ON THE ARTIST:

Auke de Vries is a leading Dutch sculptor who lives and works in The Hague. His iconic, monumental public sculptures are prominent in numerous European cities and he is widely collected, privately and publicly.

The illustration shows his work ‘Gelandet’ astride the Renzo Piano designed Daimler office on Potsdamer Platz, Berlin.

‘A Gentle Invasion’ is Auke’s response to his enduring intrigue with South Africa, as a jury member of the annual Mercedes-Benz Award for South African Art & Culture and through his residencies at the NIROX Foundation over the past two years.

The work for this exhibition has been produced in his studio in The Hague and shipped with the support of the Mondriaan Foundation and the Netherlands Embassy. The installation follows Auke’s carefully researched and articulate plan for the NIROX landscape and studios, revealing his intense examination of scale and the relationship between sculpture, man and nature – revealing his unique poetic vision and mastery of his materials.

The exhibition comprises 11 large new works and a collection of small sculptures and drawings which reflect the artist’s studio and workshop, providing an intimate insight into his working process and personal visual language.

Auke will be in residence at NIROX intermittently during the show.

Enrich your Sunday afternoon at the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) with the launch of three events: travel with George Mahashe on his photographic journey, Gae Lebowa, that leads him to the wisdom of his ancestry; contemplate the dynamic time-based exhibition Time’s Arrow curated by Anthea Buys and consider the themes of freedom and violence with Berlin based artist Claudia Shneider.

GAE LEBOWA: Opens at 4pm

Gae Lebowa, sees Mahashe traveling north, a direction that symbolises a psychological space, a general direction, a genealogical origin and a point of knowledge. Here he finds old men and woman who are the metaphor for knowledge and wisdom and, with these, Mahasha explores the road that leads to his being.

TIME’S ARROW: Opens at 5pm

Time’s Arrow is a time-based exhibition project starting on 21 Feb and ending on 18 April. It looks at the relationship between the formation of the Johannesburg Art Gallery’s collection of artworks and how this collection is viewed, read, imagined, forgotten, resented, buried and dug up again years later. One narrative strand of the JAG collection’s history will initiate the show and this will be followed by works by emerging and established artists and researchers that respond specifically or broadly to this initial selection. http://www.timesarrowatjag.blogspot.com/

Performance artist Lerato Shadi’s proposal was one of the first eight projects selected earlier this year by an independent jury of arts professionals for the new space Goethe on Main in downtown Johannesburg. The show is now scheduled from 14 January to 6 February 2010 and comprises of three works: the video performances ‘Mmitlwa’ and ‘Selogilwe’, and the opening night performance of ‘Se sa Feleng’, along with its remaining sculptural installation.

As the artist explains, ‘The video works ‘Mmitlwa’ and ‘Selogilwe’ as well as the residual sculptural installation ‘Se sa Feleng’, explore themes around self-reflection, spirituality, and unseen life processes. The performances look at life as an act of creation, consider that every moment leaves behind a memory, a trace, something tangible or ethereal that refers to it, or marks its passage.’

In ‘Mmitlwa‘ (meaning thorn referencing a Sestwana idiom) Shadi appears naked on a white plinth – making reference to theGilbert and George concept of the ‘living sculpture’. She proceeds to wrap her entire body in white masking tape. This is followed by the painstaking process of unwrapping, or freeing herself. The action, which takes about 30 minutes in total, alludes to the idea that we are each responsible for our own experiences, both creators and destroyers of our various self-imposed constraints.

‘Selogilwe’ a Setswana word meaning ‘woven’, is the title of a video performance featuring Shadi on a white plinth, this time seated in the Lotus position. Here she knits a red woolen string, and seems to pull the thread from inside her belly. At the end, a pile of woven string lies on the gallery floor – the only evidence of the seven hour long process.

The third work – ‘Se sa Feleng’ meaning ‘that which does not end’ is short for a Setswana idiom which states : ‘that which does not end is an abomination of nature’. The entire ritual, performed on the opening night, takes about three hours to perform. Here Shadi crawls repetitively around and through twelve metal cubes with a red crocheted string which appears to be pulled from her back, forming an infinity sign on the central bars of her self-constructed cage, whose dimensions were made specifically to fit her own body.

The element of time and physical endurance is of particular significance to Shadi – all works take place over long periods of time, and seem to condense lifelong processes into unspoken parables, with ritual activities that push her beyond her own levels of physical comfort
